Programme Note
The Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague brings Vivaldi's The Four Seasons to All Saints Church, Akenside Hill, Newcastle as part of its autumn 2026 tour of the United Kingdom, performed live by a chamber ensemble drawn from the orchestra's principal players, with the young Czech violinist Matteo Hager as soloist.
All Saints on Akenside Hill is one of Newcastle's most remarkable buildings – a rare Georgian elliptical church designed by David Stephenson in the 1780s, standing just above the Quayside with views across the Tyne. Recently restored and returned to use, its oval nave gives the audience an unusually intimate view of the musicians. It is a short walk from Central Station and the Quayside.
At the heart of the evening are Vivaldi's four violin concertos – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – the most popular set of pieces in the whole Baroque repertoire, published in Venice around 1725 with four sonnets describing birdsong, summer storms, harvest celebrations and icy winter winds. They are framed by four other favourites of the string repertoire: Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Bach's Air on the G String, Pachelbel's Canon in D and a suite from Handel's Water Music, which brings the concert to a festive close.
The Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague (BSOP) is a professional orchestra from the Czech capital, home to a string tradition that runs from Dvořák and Smetana to the present day. Alongside its full symphonic concerts, the orchestra tours internationally with chamber programmes, bringing the warmth of the Czech string sound to churches, cathedrals and concert halls across Europe. Soloist Matteo Hager is a young Czech violinist currently studying in London, whose performances of The Four Seasons combine virtuoso brilliance in the fast movements with a singing, expressive tone in the slow ones.
