Programme Note

Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time remains one of the most significant British choral works of the 20th century.

Composed in response to the events leading to Krystallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) and ultimately the events of World War II, this oratorio explores themes of oppression and humanity.

The piece also contains a number of beautiful African-America spirituals, used as ‘universal chorales’, to speak to us all about the collected sorrow of persecution, drawing the parallels with slavery.

For this performance, the Blackheath Halls Orchestra and Chorus will be joined by some world-class soloists who bring both vocal excellence as well as a meaningful connection to that heritage.
