Programme Note

"I will admit that I could happily omit the 'German' and simply say 'Human'." Composed in the shadow of loss, Brahms's admission before conducting the first full performance of his Ein deutsches Requiem pointed to his desire to write an ecumenical requiem that prioritised comforting the living and celebrating the essence of life. Infused with powerful natural imagery and some of his most beautiful melodies, Brahms's profoundly moving masterpiece at once unites the intimate and universal and, over 150 years later, continues to offer a meditative journey of solace, empathy and hope. It is performed here in the composer's own four-hands piano reduction.

Mendelssohn's Verleih uns frieden ('Grant us peace'), composed during political unrest in Europe, opens the concert.
