Programme Note

Raphael Wallfisch and Simon Callaghan bring together three contrasting works for cello and piano as part of the Stroud Arts Festival’s 80th celebration.

Henriëtte Bosmans’ Three Impressions are atmospheric pieces, by turns reflective, lyrical and understated. Beethoven’s Sonata in A major, Op. 69 is one of the best-loved works in the cello repertoire, with its warm opening, lively conversation between the two instruments and spirited finale. After the interval comes Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 19, a big romantic work that moves from a dark, expressive opening to sweeping melodies.
