Programme Note
The Ronnie Scott’s Classical All Stars will reimagine iconic repertoire for a chamber-sized ensemble, bringing the same spirit of virtuosity, flair and storytelling that has made the All Stars a cornerstone of the club’s identity. This concert will delve into the symphonic and concerto repertoire for the first in a series of Symphonic Sounds.
An actual Symphony Orchestra can often have up to 100 musicians - for this performance, the scores have been dramatically and skilfully reduced for 7 musicians. In addition to a few well-known symphonic themes, the performance will feature Mozart’s serenade ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’, written in 1787. There is still a mystery as to why he wrote it, as he was working on the opera Don Giovanni at the time.
Violinist Lizzie Ball will perform Vaughan Williams' tone poem ‘The Lark Ascending’. Composed in 1914, it evokes the skylark flying over the countryside - instead it will be rising over Soho!
One of the most monumental pieces in the classical repertoire is the second piano concerto of Serge Rachmaninoff, composed around 1900. This was the composer’s triumphant comeback after the disastrous premiere of his first symphony and has become one of his most famous and most-loved compositions. Pianist James Pearson first performed this live on Classic FM with a full symphony Orchestra and will repeat that role for this exclusive ’new’ version.
