Programme Note

The evening opens with Gade’s Efterklange af Ossian (Echoes of Ossian Overture), a work that blends the spirit of Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave overture with melodies inspired by Danish folk songs. Grieg’s energetic orchestral suite is infused with Norwegian nationalism—featuring lilting dances, lyrical melodies, pulsating rhythms, and memorable folk-inspired motifs. The Nordic theme continues in the second half of the program with Sibelius’s First Symphony, in which the composer explores his emerging sense of the “hero” figure within the context of Finnish national identity.
