Programme Note
This promises to be a varied and compelling programme of works composed almost a century apart but presenting themes relevant to our own time.
Haydn’s Nelson Mass was composed in 1798, but its dramatic themes call to modern audiences. Haydn originally called it a “Mass for troubled times” because of its context of the threat of Napoleonic forces to peace and the pervasive climate of fear in Europe. Following Nelson’s dramatic victory, it became known as Nelson Mass, and it is easy to see how audiences would have associated the changes in mood from sombre and threatening to dramatic, energetic and jubilant with Nelson’s victory.
Vivaldi’s well-known Gloria is similarly full of contrast, energy and joy, although the twelve movements allow darker themes of fragility and transience to assert themselves in emotionally expressive moments. Together these works will give the audience a taste of Baroque and Classical music in the beautiful and intimate setting of St Lawrence Church
