Programme Note

Stroud Choral Society, accompanied by the Bristol Ensemble, are excited to be performing Elgar's Dream of Gernotius, an emotionally-powerful setting of Cardinal Newman's poem about the journey of an ordinary human soul through death towards judgment before their God. First performed in Birmingham Town Hall in 1900, it is now widely considered one of the great choral masterpieces, scored for full orchestra, three soloists, and a large choir.
