Programme Note
This concert explores two very different ideas of heroism: one human and direct, the other dreamlike and mysterious.
Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony is where the “heroic” symphony truly begins. From its opening chords, it feels bold and restless, full of drive, struggle and determination. Nothing here is straightforward. Triumph has to be fought for, and that’s part of what makes it so compelling.
After the interval, Wagner’s Parsifal Symphonic Suite offers a completely different world. Drawn from his final opera, it moves slowly and expansively, creating a sense of time stretching out. The music feels immersive and atmospheric, full of glowing textures and long, unfolding lines.
With Peter Selwyn on the podium, this is a concert of contrasts: Beethoven’s urgent human drama set against Wagner’s more otherworldly vision. Together they create a powerful, absorbing listening experience that rewards complete immersion.
