Programme Note
The RTWSO opens its new season with a programme full of contrasts: intimate, dramatic and hugely uplifting by turns.
We’re delighted to welcome cellist Laura van der Heijden, whose warm, expressive playing makes her an ideal soloist for Elgar’s Cello Concerto. This is one of the great English orchestral works, full of long, singing lines, quiet reflection and emotional depth that unfolds naturally as you listen.
The concert begins with Brahms’ Tragic Overture, a work that packs a surprising amount of drama and urgency into just a few minutes. After the interval, the energy shifts completely with Copland’s Third Symphony, ending in the iconic Fanfare for the Common Man – a piece instantly recognisable, even if you can’t quite place where from.
Conducted by Peter Selwyn, this is a programme that moves from intensity to reflection to pure exhilaration, and a strong, confident start to the season.
