Tolstoy got his inspiration for his novella from Beethoven’s sonata - the sonata being highlighted as the catalyst for an assumed affair that leads to a murder. Janáček then wrote his quartet inspired by Tolstoy’s story - today you can hear how the three works interlink with the themes of philosophical quests, obsession and passion.
