Programme Note
FTo open the Festival, we chose two musical poems separated by a short Mahler piece - first, Chausson’s magical Poème, inspired by Ivan Turgenev’s “Chant de l’amour triomphant” (Song of Triumphant Love) - a romantic novella about a love triangle that is filled with mysticism and where music plays a crucial role in evoking deep feelings.
Gustav Mahler’s Piano Quartet is his only surviving piece of instrumental chamber music. This work was planned to be just the 1st Movement of a longer piece, but although Mahler started on a 2nd Movement, he abandoned the entire project and only this 11-minute piece remains, full of pianistic virtuosity.
Franz Schubert wrote 15 string quartets, of which tonight’s is the 14th. Schubert wrote it after he had suffered a serious illness and realised that in fact he was slowly dying. The quartet takes its name from a poem by Matthias Claudius, which Schubert set to music in 1817. The theme is a death knell that accompanies the song about the terror and comfort of death.
