A rare chance to hear a complete performance of Telemann's '12 Fantasies for Solo Flute' - an extraordinary, intimate journey through one of the flute repertoire's most beloved works, performed by acclaimed flautist Nicola Woodward.
Described as offering "hypnotic, magical playing, as near as you will come to mesmerism in music" (Cambridge Critique), Woodward brings a rare depth of connection to these fantasies, with Concerto.net praising the "absolute connection" felt "inside the gates of her enchanted flute."
Nicola Woodward studied joint first study flute and piano at the Royal College of Music and won exhibition scholarships on both instruments. She also won the Eve Kisch flute prize and several other prizes for all-round musicianship. I have given recitals at the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room (as winner of the Park Lane Group Competition) and live on Classic FM. She has worked with the London Philharmonic and Bournemouth Orchestras and toured in South America and Turkey for the British Council.
As well as many recitals in festivals across the UK, Nicola had many rewarding years the 'Live Music Now!' scheme with her brother Justin and their flutes/marimba duo taking music to the wider community. They also regularly entertained guests of HRH the Prince of Wales at Highrove, Windsor and Buckingham Palace. Her recording of the wonderful 96 unaccompanied pieces by Koechlin 'Chants de Nectaire' on Hoxa label achieved widespread critical acclaim including 'Classical CD of the week' in the Guardian. Nicola recently made a live recording of the 12 Fantasies by Telemann - soon to be released and taken on tour.
Online Nicola has given recitals, run three international competitions with Wissam Boustany, given masterclasses at home and abroad and performed the Complete 'Chants de Nectaire' livestreamed for the Clifton International Music Festival.
Nicola's love of folk music led her to recording a CD of classical music inspired by folk music of the British Isles, playing and recording Flamenco music, playing and singing in folk bands and co-founding the Rockhampton Folk Festival now in its seventh year. She is now working on a World Music project 'Flute Without Frontiers' to introduce folk styles to younger players.
All concerts support PalMusic UK, a UK-registered charity funding the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (ESNCM), which nurtures young Palestinian musicians through classes, scholarships and outreach programmes across Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Gaza and refugee camps throughout Palestine.
